These oil pumps are NOT a "bolt it on and forget it" component.  Many engine variables must be considered when running a low drag oil pump.  The oil capacity requirements of most engines are less than what the pump is supplying, so as a result, power is robbed from the engine by providing more oil capacity than is required.  Every engine will have its own unique oil capacity requirements based on many variables such as bearing clearances, oil viscosity, oil temp operating range, torque levels, RPM levels, type of valvetrain, oil passage dimensions, precision of machined components, surface finish, etc.  The key is understanding your engines oiling requirements and supplying just enough oil capacity to keep the engine alive, but at the same time, minimizing the power required to supply that required capacity.  There is risk associated with doing this.  So please consult with your engine builder before using one of these pumps. There are alot of "Rules of Thumb" used when it comes to oil pressure vs. RPM, but unfortunately, it is not that simple.  Also, check out the link under Related Links titled, "How to Choose Oil".


How much power are these pumps worth?
According to engine builders Allan Patterson and Darrell Wikle, who both have experience building engines with these pumps, there is between 3 to 8 HP worth of gains made when properly utilizing these oil pumps.  Larry Stewart, an engine builder and the man behind the modifications of these pumps, also regularly realizes power gains within this range.

In the ultra competitive world of NHRA Pro Stock Drag Racing, where every fraction of a horsepower counts, engines make roughly 1400 HP, spin 10,000 plus RPM and only carry around 35psi - 40 psi of oil pressure with oil as thin as water.  This is only accomplished by having a thorough understanding of the above mentioned engine variables and how to maximize the effect of each variable to allow for a minimum parasitic loss to the engine.
