Frictional losses occur when two objects moving relative to each other make contact and their kinetic energy is converted into heat. 

Examples where this may occur:
Engine/Drivetrain bearings, piston rings/cylinder wall, cam/follower, pushrod to rocker interface, differential and transmission gears, brake drag, etc.....
